Our home village in Jaffna

Urumpirai (உரும்பிராய்) is a town in Jaffna District in Sri Lanka's Northern Province, about 9 km from Jaffna along the Palaly road. It is part of the Valikamam East division.

Urelu lies to the north, Kondavil to the south, Inuvil to the west, and Kopay to the east. The junction of the Palaly road and the Manipay–Kaithady road connects the different parts of the town.

Land and livelihoods

Urumpirai is known for its red soil and agricultural traditions. Bananas and vegetables are among the crops grown here; grapes and potatoes also feature in memories of farming during the 1970s and 1980s.

Its public market brings together local traders and residents buying vegetables, meat, and fish. These everyday places are part of the village's shared story.

History, heritage, and traditions

Local tradition connects the name Urumpirai with large ‘Pirai’ trees that provided shade and resting places for travellers. This is a community account of the name's origin. We welcome family records and recollections that help document the village's early history.

Karunakara Pillaiyar Kovil and Karpaga Pillaiyar Kovil are well-known temples in Urumpirai. Local tradition associates Karunakara Pillaiyar with Karunakara Thondaiman. Karpaga Pillaiyar is recognisable by its sculpted entrance tower and clock towers. The photographs on this page show both temples, alongside an inscription from Urumpirai preserved at Jaffna Archaeological Museum.

Urumpirai Hindu College on the Palaly road, Saiva Tamil Vidyalayam, and Chandrodaya Vidyalayam are part of the town's educational heritage. The Ministry of Education’s 2024 Northern Province school list (PDF) records Urumpirai Hindu College on Palaly Road. The college website shares its own history and school news. Teachers, former pupils, and families can help preserve school memories, photographs, and records for the next generation.

The public market and main road junction are familiar local landmarks. A memorial to Pon Sivakumaran also forms part of the town's commemorative landscape. Temple festivals, family customs, food, and music connect village life with families overseas. Share a memory through our contact page, including the place, year, and source of your account.

This guide brings together the association’s community account of Urumpirai. Stories about the origin of the village name and temple traditions are recollections, rather than a dated historical record.

The photographs are documented on the original Urumpirai inscription image record, the Karpaga Pillaiyar photograph record and the Karunakara Pillaiyar record linked on our photo credits page. These records establish photograph provenance; they do not independently verify every historical account above.
